Film Producer Akash Baskaran Linked to ₹1000 Crore Scam

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has intensified its investigation into the massive ₹1,000 crore liquor procurement scam by conducting raids at multiple locations in Chennai, including the residence of popular Tamil film producer Akash Bhaskaran.

Akash Bhaskaran, known for producing high-profile films starring Dhanush, Simbu, and Sivakarthikeyan, is now under the ED's radar in connection with alleged money laundering activities linked to the TASMAC scam. ED officials began search operations early this morning at properties in Teynampet, T. Nagar, Sethupathi, and Choolaimedu, targeting residences of top TASMAC officials and associates.

This latest development follows a significant finding by the ED in March, when it was revealed that distilleries and bottling units working with TASMAC had siphoned off over ₹1,000 crore in unaccounted cash. The money, reportedly obtained through inflated expenses and fake purchases, was allegedly used to secure increased supply contracts via kickbacks.

Akash Bhaskaran, who founded Town Pictures, rose quickly in Tamil cinema. His notable productions include:

• Idli Kadai (starring Dhanush)

• Parasakthi (featuring Sivakarthikeyan, directed by Sudha Kongara)

• STR 49 (with Simbu)

• The upcoming Idiyam Murali (starring Atharvaa), which he is also directing

Akash, who previously worked as an assistant director under Vignesh Shivan, is the son of a well-known jeweller from Salem. His recent wedding drew significant attention due to the presence of top political figures and film celebrities, further highlighting his growing prominence.

The ongoing raid at his residence is part of a broader probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). According to reports, the ED is exploring whether funds generated illegally through TASMAC dealings were funneled into film production and other ventures.
